Inmate Gets Life in Stabbing

It took 30 minutes for a Columbus County Superior Court jury to find David Mark Fields guilty of stabbing a fellow inmate 14 times with a prison shank.

Fields was sentenced to life without parole for the killing, which occurred Sept. 28, 2019 at Columbus Correctional.

Testimony and video surveillance showed that Scott Whitmeyer was stabbed by fields using a homemade knife, called a “shank”, in a bathroom. Fields then discarded the shirt he wore during the stabbing and changed shirts.

Columbus Correctional employee Timothy Moody managed to retrieve the murder weapon from the prison sewer system, District Attorney Jon David said in a press release.

A Corrections officer testified that when Fields was asked about Whitmeyer, Fields replied “It is what it is, it’s on camera.”

The case was investigated by the Department of corrections and the sheriff’s office.

The District Attorney’s Office would like to thank our local law enforcement agencies for their collaborative efforts in this investigation,” said Asst. District Attorney Allie Smith. “The hard work of these officers ensured a just result in this case.” Smith and ASA Allan Adams prosecuted the case.

“Our laws apply equally to everyone,” David said. “Hopefully this sends a strong message to inmates that we will enforce the law inside our prison walls for the protection of all.”
