Half Dozen Departments Worked to Protect Homes

Forest Service crews are still on the scene of a massive wildfire in the western part of the county. Firefighters from a half-dozen departments worked to protect homes along Mangum Road that were threatened by the blaze. Most of the work today is mopping up hot spots, but there are still heavy smoke conditions in the area. Officials are urging residents to delay any outdoor burning until after we get some serious rainfall.

Saturday’s fire danger forecast looks to be as serious as Thursdays, when strong winds whipped the flames through several farms and woodlands. Lumber River Campground opened their property as a temporary shelter for Evergreen, Boardman and Cerro Gordo area residents affected by the fires. No homes or buildings were damaged, although flames came within a few yards of several structures.
