Woman Charged in Child Abuse Case

A Tabor City area woman has lost custody of her son and is facing multiple criminal charges after allegedly neglecting the infant while she smoked crack cocaine.

Kayla Hope Tyndall, 27, is held under $10,000 secured bond, charged with negligence of a child causing serious injury, misdemeanor child abuse, misdemeanor larceny, and more than 20 counts of obtaining property by false pretenses. Her address was listed on jail records as 14 Tater Bug Lane, Tabor City.

Tyndall allegedly removed a drain tube from her eight-month-old son’s groin after she failed to get the child to a followup appointment after surgery. The infant was admitted to McLeod Medical Center, and later transferred to Novant New Hanover with a serious infection.

A social worker at Novant contacted the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office after a urine screening of the child showed cocaine in his system, the report said.

Tyndall allegedly admitted to knowing that the surgical site was infected, but took no action because she was smoking crack “for two days,” the report said.

While deputies were seeking warrants for child abuse, the Dept. of Social Services contacted law enforcement to report that Tyndall had been ordered to leave the hospital, and DSS was seeking custody of the infant boy.

As that case was being investigated, the report said, Tyndall’s ex-boyfriend David Little reported that Tyndall had allegedly stolen several hundred dollars from his mother, Deborah Tyson. Tyndall was living with Tyson at the time, the report said, and took the information from Tyson’s pocketbook. The report said that from April through September, Tyndall allegedly accessed Tyson’s banking information and took $1,475 from two bank accounts via CashApp.

Tyndall was arrested Oct. 10 at her home on 25 counts of obtaining property by false pretense, neglect and child abuse. She was also served with a misdemeanor larceny warrant from Shallotte Police.
